FTC-Telekom Waterpolo has secured the future of its head coach, Balázs Nyéki, with a contract extension that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2028. The announcement was made by FTC President Gábor Kubatov on Friday, solidifying the club’s commitment to one of the most successful figures in its modern history.
A Lifelong Connection to Ferencváros
Nyéki’s deep ties to Ferencváros began in his childhood when he first started swimming and playing water polo at the club. After a brief stint away due to financial challenges, he returned to FTC to complete his playing career and later transition into coaching. His journey with the club has been marked by numerous triumphs, both in and out of the water.
FTC’s executive vice president, Zoltán Nyíri, emphasized Nyéki’s unwavering dedication: “Balázs Nyéki is Ferencváros in water polo. He has devoted his entire career to the club, and now he is leading it to unprecedented success.”
A Record-Breaking Coaching Career
Nyéki took over as head coach in 2023 and has enjoyed a remarkable tenure so far, winning 75 of his first 76 matches in charge. Under his leadership, FTC reclaimed the Champions League title in 2024, alongside domestic dominance in the Hungarian league and cup competitions. His relentless work ethic and innovative approach have set him apart, with Nyíri highlighting his forward-thinking mindset: “Süni is constantly working to modernize water polo, whether through training, strategy, or technology. His drive and passion are unmatched.”
The contract extension ensures that FTC will continue to benefit from Nyéki’s expertise as they aim to defend their Champions League crown and build on their success. Alongside Nyéki, assistant coach Balázs Korényi and goalkeeping coach András Gárdonyi have also extended their contracts, reinforcing the club’s long-term vision.
Nyéki’s Commitment to Excellence
Reflecting on his renewed commitment, Nyéki expressed gratitude and ambition: “You can’t get tired of success, and I want to win even more trophies. I wake up every day striving to be better, to improve my players and my team. That is what drives me.”
His long-term vision aligns with FTC’s continued investment in both experienced stars and young talents, with players such as Dušan Mandić, Vogel Soma, Edoardo Di Somma, Ákos Nagy, and Vince Varga all securing their futures with the club. With stability at the helm, Ferencváros is poised to maintain its place among the elite of European water polo.
