Barceloneta finally broke their duck against Novi Beograd, claiming a dramatic 19–16 victory in a high-scoring Champions League clash in Barcelona.
In a game that delivered 35 goals and relentless attacking play, the hosts held their nerve in the closing stages. With the score locked at 16–16, Barceloneta produced a decisive 3–0 run in the final 2:16 to secure their first-ever win over the Serbian side.
The result ends a frustrating run for the Spanish champions, who had previously recorded one draw and three defeats against Novi Beograd — including two losses via penalty shootouts.
It was a contest that never allowed either side to fully take control. Novi Beograd struck first, racing into a 2–0 lead inside the opening 90 seconds, but Barceloneta quickly responded. By the end of a breathless first quarter, the teams were level at 6–6, with virtually every possession resulting in a goal.
The pace slowed slightly in the second period as both goalkeepers, Unai Aguirre and Milan Glusac, began to make their presence felt. Still, the margins remained razor-thin. Novi Beograd edged ahead late in the half at 9–8, but Barceloneta responded immediately, taking a 10–9 lead into the break.
The pattern continued in the third quarter, with Novi Beograd repeatedly drawing level, only for Barceloneta — led by Bernat Sanahuja — to find an answer each time. The hosts carried a narrow 14–13 advantage into the final period.
The decisive moments came late. Barceloneta extended their lead to two goals for the first time at 15–13, but Novi Beograd once again fought back to level at 16–16. From there, however, the Spanish side found another gear.
Sanahuja and Vince Vigvari struck to put the hosts in control, before Aguirre delivered a crucial save on a man-up opportunity with just over a minute remaining. Vigvari then sealed the result with a last-second goal, capping off a statement win.
Sanahuja led all scorers with six goals, while Munarriz added four and Vigvari three in a strong attacking display.
Earlier in the day, Olympiacos secured a 14–11 win over Brescia in the other Group A fixture. The Greek side built their advantage in the second quarter and managed the game from there, despite a late push from the Italians.
