The 12th round of the Hungarian League delivered a dramatic Budapest derby, as BVSC defeated Vasas 11:10 in a tense encounter that sets the tone for an intense fortnight between the two rivals.
This was the first of three meetings in just two weeks. The capital sides will now shift their focus to Europe, where they clash again on February 25 and March 7 in the Euro Cup eighth-finals.
BVSC strike first – and last
BVSC made a flying start, storming into a 3:0 lead inside the opening four minutes. Vasas gradually settled and fought their way back, drawing level at 5:5 before halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Gyárfás handed Vasas their only lead of the evening at 6:5. It proved short-lived. BVSC responded with authority and regained control, stretching the margin to 10:7 in their first possession of the fourth period.
Yet the drama was far from over. Vasas clawed their way back once more, leveling at 10:10. With 99 seconds remaining, Mátyás Mészáros struck the decisive blow to seal an 11:10 victory for BVSC.
Mészáros and Zsombor Eklér led the winners with three goals each, while Lakatos, Dala, Djurdjic and Szalai scored twice apiece for Vasas.
OSC Budapest finish strong against Eger
OSC secured a hard-earned 9:8 win over Eger in another tightly contested clash.
Eger dictated much of the rhythm through three quarters and entered the final period ahead 8:7. However, OSC found another gear late on. They leveled at 8:8 in the 27th minute before Bence Bendeguz Varga fired home the winner just 20 seconds from time.
Tamás Sedlmayer scored three times for OSC, while Rajmund Radli matched that tally for Eger.
Ferencvárosi TC dominate on the road
League leaders Ferencváros underlined their title credentials with a commanding 18:9 away victory over Szolnoki Vízilabda SC.
Stylianos Argyropoulos and Vendel Vigvári both scored three goals, while ten different outfield players contributed to the scoreboard — a clear sign of the champions’ depth.
