Chase Dodd fires five as BVSC survive Eger test in Hungary

BVSC were pushed all the way by Eger before securing a 13-11 victory on the road, while Hungary’s other leading sides enjoyed much more comfortable wins in the fourth round of the OB I season.

Ferencvaros maintained their perfect start with a convincing victory over OSC, while Vasas, Szolnok and Honved also collected three points. Elsewhere, Szeged claimed their first win of the campaign in dramatic fashion against Debrecen.

BVSC faced the toughest assignment of the round and found themselves trailing 7-5 at half-time in Eger.

The visitors made only limited progress in a low-scoring third quarter, reducing the deficit to one at 8-7, before the contest opened up in the final period.

BVSC drew level three times at 8-8, 9-9 and 10-10 before finally moving ahead at 11-10. Eger immediately responded to make it 11-11, but that proved to be their final goal.

BVSC struck twice inside the final two minutes and 20 seconds to escape with a 13-11 victory and preserve their perfect start to the season.

USA international and Paris 2024 Olympic bronze medallist Chase Dodd was the standout performer, scoring five goals for BVSC. Ferenc Salamon led Eger with four.

Ferencvaros were far less troubled as the defending champions swept aside OSC 20-9.

FTC had effectively settled the contest by half-time, racing into a 13-4 advantage after scoring seven times in the opening quarter and another six in the second. Hungarian international Krisztian Manhercz finished with five goals.

Szolnok recorded the biggest victory of the round, beating UVSE 21-4, while Honved defeated Szentes 18-7.

Vasas had to recover from a slow start against Kaposvar. They trailed 6-4 at half-time but dominated the second half 14-5 to turn the game around and eventually run out 18-11 winners.

The day’s most dramatic finish came between Szeged and Debrecen.

Szeged appeared in control when they established a 6-2 advantage late in the third quarter, only for Debrecen to produce a remarkable comeback. A 6-1 run put the visitors 8-7 ahead with just 96 seconds remaining.

Szeged equalised on their next possession before Peter Kurti delivered the winner with only two seconds left, securing a 9-8 victory and Szeged’s first points of the season.

After four rounds, Ferencvaros and BVSC remain perfect on 12 points, with Vasas, Szolnok and Honved forming the chasing group.
