Construction Begins on World Aquatics’ New Global Headquarters in Budapest

A landmark project for international aquatics has officially begun in Budapest, where construction is now underway on the new global headquarters of World Aquatics.

The foundation stone was laid on 7 October 2025 in the 13th District of the Hungarian capital, marking the start of a multi-year development that will see the world’s third-largest sports federation relocate its base from Lausanne to Budapest.

When completed in mid-2028, the new complex will serve as both the organisation’s main administrative centre and a state-of-the-art global aquatics training hub.

A New Home for Global Aquatics

The privately funded project is being developed by Southblaze Ltd., covering almost 20,000 square metres. The site will include:

  • World Aquatics’ permanent headquarters and offices
  • A high-performance aquatics training centre
  • Accommodation for athletes
  • Multi-purpose facilities for meetings and events

From this new base, World Aquatics will oversee the worldwide governance of swimming, water polo, diving, artistic swimming, open water swimming, and high diving.

According to the federation, the goal is to create a “timeless, multifunctional complex” that blends tradition and innovation — reflecting both Hungarian architectural identity and the global spirit of aquatic sport.

Refined Design and Urban Integration

The project’s updated design was developed following the 2023 relocation agreement between the Hungarian State and World Aquatics. Since then, Southblaze Ltd. has re-envisioned the architectural plans, replacing earlier LED façade concepts with a more contemporary design that aligns with Hungarian architectural traditions.

The revised concept has received formal approval from:

  • The 13th District Municipality
  • The Budapest Municipality
  • The Hungarian State
  • The National Architectural Planning Council, one of few developments to earn its endorsement

The complex also supports the Budapest 2030 Urban Development Concept, a citywide initiative aiming to strengthen the capital’s international role, encourage sustainable urban growth, and enhance Budapest’s position as a centre for sport and culture.

Economic and Strategic Significance

Beyond its sporting relevance, the headquarters represents an economic and symbolic milestone. Budapest has hosted major aquatic events in recent years — including the 2017 and 2022 World Championships and the upcoming 2027 edition — but this move will establish the city as the everyday administrative and decision-making centre of global aquatics.

Officials and developers expect long-term benefits through increased international visibility, tourism, and professional opportunities in Hungary’s sport and service sectors.

Looking Ahead

Construction is expected to continue through the next three years, with completion scheduled for mid-2028. Once operational, the Budapest headquarters will replace Lausanne as the permanent base of World Aquatics, combining governance, athlete development, and event management under one roof.
