Ferencvaros one win from Hungarian title defence after dominant second final victory

Ferencvaros moved to within one victory of defending its Hungarian League title after beating Honved 20-12 in the second match of the best-of-five final series.

After a much tighter opening game, in which Honved stayed close for almost three quarters, the second final followed a very different pattern. Ferencvaros started quickly, controlled the match from the opening minutes, and built a lead that Honved never looked likely to overturn.

The visitors were already 2-0 ahead inside the first two minutes, before extending the advantage to 4-1 midway through the opening period. Ferencvaros continued to punish Honved defensively and, by the end of the first quarter, had already opened up a commanding 8-2 lead.

The decisive spell continued in the second period. Playing with intensity at both ends of the pool, Ferencvaros moved nine goals clear in the 13th minute at 12-3. Honved managed to reduce the deficit slightly before halftime, but the damage had already been done, with Ferencvaros leading 12-4 at the break.

Honved found more rhythm in attack during the second half, but Ferencvaros’ own offence remained too strong. The visitors did not maintain the same defensive level in the third and fourth periods, but their lead never dropped below six goals as they calmly closed out another important win.

Dusan Mandic, Stylianos Argyropoulos and Vendel Vigvari all scored three goals for Ferencvaros, while Marton Vamos, Gergo Fekete, Gergo Zalanki, Krisztian Manhercz, Denes Varga and Szilard Jansik were also among the scorers. Nikola Moskov led Honved with four goals, while Ekler added three.

Ferencvaros now leads the final series 2-0 and needs just one more win to retain the Hungarian title.

Elsewhere, BVSC also moved 2-0 ahead in the third-place playoff series after a high-scoring 19-17 win over Szolnok. In the fifth-place playoffs, Vasas secured fifth place after beating Szeged 3-1 in the series, following a 14-7 home victory and a narrow 13-12 away win.
