Five teams remain unbeaten after the second round of the Greek Water Polo League, with Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Apollon Smyrnis, Panionios and Hydraikos all making it two wins from two.
Olympiacos and Panathinaikos both produced convincing victories ahead of the start of their Champions League campaigns, while Apollon continued their impressive attacking start to the season.
Olympiacos cruised to a 24-5 victory away to Ilisiakos, following up their 25-3 opening-round win against Glyfada.
Elvis Fatovic’s side established a 6-1 advantage in the opening period and never looked back, eventually scoring eight times in the final quarter.
Eleven different Olympiacos players found the net, with captain Dinos Genidounias leading the scoring with four goals. Ioannis Fountoulis, Dimitris Dimos, Dimitris Alafragis and Alexandros Pouros all scored three.
The Greek champions now turn their attention to Tuesday’s Champions League opener away to Hannover.
Panathinaikos were similarly comfortable in Thessaloniki, beating PAOK 20-10.
The visitors led 5-2 after the opening period, although PAOK responded in the second to reduce the deficit to 8-6 at half-time.
Panathinaikos took control after the break, winning the second half 12-4. Angelos Kopeliadis led their scoring with four goals, while Konstantinos Gkiouvetsis and Georgios Nikolaidis added three each.
They also move onto European action next, travelling to France to face Marseille in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Apollon Smyrnis are another side with maximum points after an impressive 23-12 victory over Chios.
The opening period finished 5-5, but Apollon pulled away decisively from there, winning the remaining three quarters 6-2, 6-3 and 6-2.
Nikola Bogdanovic was the standout scorer with six goals, while Marko Vavic, Andreas Lorantos and Kechalaris scored three apiece. It takes Apollon’s tally to 49 goals from their opening two league matches following last week’s 26-10 victory over Peristeri.
Panionios also made it two from two with a 17-11 victory over Chania in Crete.
They effectively decided the contest during an excellent first half, leading 12-4 at the break. Chania responded by winning the third period 6-3, but the damage had already been done.
A. Bitsakos scored four for Panionios, with Grammatikos and Gounas adding three each. Ivanov was the game’s leading scorer with six for Chania.
Hydraikos had to work harder to maintain their perfect start, beating Peristeri 10-7 on Friday evening.
Only one goal separated the teams at half-time before Hydraikos moved 9-7 ahead after three periods. Their defence then shut Peristeri out completely in the final quarter to secure the victory. Ancic led Hydraikos with three goals.
Vouliagmeni responded strongly to their opening-round defeat against Panionios, recording their first win of the season with a dominant 20-6 victory over Ethnikos.
They raced into an 11-3 half-time advantage and continued to extend the margin after the break. Ioannis Tottis and Christos Troulos scored four goals each, while Nikolaos Kastrinakis added three.
The closest contest of the weekend came between Glyfada and Palaio Faliro, who shared the points in a 12-12 draw.
Palaio Faliro appeared set for a second successive victory when Kontonis put them 12-11 ahead with 2:28 remaining, but Francisco scored with just two seconds on the clock to rescue Glyfada’s first point of the season.
After two rounds, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Apollon Smyrnis, Panionios and Hydraikos all sit on six points, with Palaio Faliro next on four.
