The Hungarian men’s league returned on Wednesday with no shortage of goals, as FTC and BVSC both made emphatic starts while three of the opening-round matches were decided by a single goal.

FTC produced the standout result of the evening, beating Vasas 22–11 away from home. A fixture that looked one of the most intriguing on paper quickly turned into a commanding opening statement from the reigning powerhouse of Hungarian water polo.

Scoring 22 against a Vasas side expected to compete near the top end of the league immediately underlined the depth and attacking quality available to FTC this season.

BVSC also began their campaign with a convincing away victory, defeating Kaposvar 20–13. After strengthening ahead of the new season, BVSC will be hoping to establish themselves among the leading sides in Hungary, and putting 20 goals on the board represented an encouraging start.

Szolnok were similarly comfortable in their opening fixture, recording a 12–6 victory over DVSE-Master Good. It was the lowest-scoring match of the round, with Szolnok limiting their opponents to just six goals.

Elsewhere, the margins were considerably tighter.

Semmelweis OSC came away from UVSE with an important 11–10 win, while Eger also secured two points on the road after edging Szentes 10–9.

Honved and Szeged provided another close contest, with the Budapest side eventually taking a 12–11 victory.

The opening night therefore offered an early glimpse at just how competitive the Hungarian league could be outside of the biggest favourites. Three of six matches finished with only a single goal separating the teams, while FTC and BVSC showed considerably more firepower in their respective victories.

With the first round now complete, attention quickly turns to whether those early statement performances can be maintained as the season begins to gather momentum.
