FTC Hit 28 as Telekom Cup Gets Underway in Budapest

The Telekom Cup got underway in Budapest on Thursday, with FTC and Vasas both opening the international pre-season tournament with victories over the Brazilian national team.

Brazil were involved in both matches on the opening day at the Nepliget, first pushing Vasas in a competitive 15-12 defeat before coming up against a much stronger FTC performance later in the evening.

Vasas made the better start in the opening match, establishing a 5-2 advantage during the first quarter. Brazil responded well before half-time, but the Hungarian side maintained their three-goal lead through a much more even second half to secure the victory.

Bence Batori was the standout scorer for Vasas with five goals, while Tamas Gyarfas and Peter Szalai both added three. Brazil were led by Sojo and Wulfhorst, who scored three apiece.

Speaking after the match, Batori described the contest as a useful competitive addition to Vasas’ preparations. The Budapest side entered the Telekom Cup only days after losing 18-12 to FTC in the Hungarian Cup final, with the early-season schedule already providing significant competitive mileage for both Hungarian clubs.

FTC then produced the most emphatic performance of Day 1, beating Brazil 28-7 despite Balazs Nyeki rotating his squad and resting several established players.

Brazil actually led 2-1 early in the contest, but the advantage disappeared quickly. FTC responded with seven consecutive goals to finish the opening quarter 8-2 ahead before extending the margin to 15-4 by half-time.

Vince Varga and Vendel Vigvari finished with five goals each, while Zsombor Vismeg, Haverkampf and Fekete all scored four. Several younger players were also handed opportunities, with Kean Varga scoring twice and Belian Czibok also finding the net.

The Telekom Cup continues on Friday, when Olympiacos enter the tournament alongside the three teams involved on the opening day. FTC and Vasas will also meet again in an all-Hungarian contest, less than a week after their Hungarian Cup final clash.

Day 1 results

Brazil 12-15 Vasas
(2-5, 4-4, 3-3, 3-3)

Brazil 7-28 FTC
(2-8, 2-7, 3-7, 0-6)
