Olympiacos S.F.P. has officially announced the appointment of Giorgos Doskas as the new head coach of its men’s water polo team. The 40-year-old Greek tactician signed a contract that will see him lead the Piraeus powerhouse through the end of the 2024–25 season.
Doskas, a club legend in his own right, now takes on a new chapter in red and white—not in the water, but on the bench. “I am returning home as a coach now and I am very happy about it,” Doskas said in his first official statement. “Our goal is to win the championship and exhaust our chances of qualifying for the Champions League, regardless of whether it no longer depends solely on us.”
A Storied Playing Career
Born on 11 November 1984 in Chios, Doskas started his water polo journey at NO Chios, where he also played professionally before moving to Olympiacos in 2003. Over the course of two stints at the club (2003–2011 and 2012–2017), he built one of the most decorated domestic résumés in Greek water polo history—winning 12 Greek Championships and 11 Greek Cups. He was also a mainstay for the Greek national team, earning more than 180 caps and scoring over 300 goals.
Coaching Path
Following his retirement from professional play, Doskas transitioned into coaching. He guided NO Chios from 2018 to 2022 and spent the 2023–24 season at NO Patras. Now, his return to Olympiacos marks a full-circle moment—this time, as the figure responsible for steering one of Europe’s most historic water polo clubs back toward the top.
The Road Ahead
Doskas steps into the role during a transitional period for Olympiacos, who are aiming to reclaim domestic supremacy and revive their Champions League hopes. While qualification to Europe’s elite competition is no longer entirely in the team’s hands, Doskas has made it clear the team will fight until the very end.
With his deep understanding of the club’s ethos, a wealth of experience at the highest level, and an unwavering commitment to Olympiacos, Giorgos Doskas returns not just to familiar waters—but to lead them forward.
