Álvaro Granados and Foteini Tricha have been named the 2025 World Aquatics Water Polo Athletes of the Year after leading their national teams to gold at the World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.
Granados was the standout performer of the men’s tournament, guiding Spain back to the top of the world podium and earning MVP honours along the way. He finished the competition with 21 goals, including five in the final victory over Hungary, as Spain reclaimed the world title for the first time since 2022. Reflecting on the award, Granados praised his teammates, describing his pride in a group that “came back after a very difficult year to play amazing water polo.”
Tricha delivered a breakthrough championship on the women’s side, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with 25 goals as Greece claimed their first World Aquatics Championships gold since 2011. After an early group-stage loss to Hungary, Greece regrouped, with Tricha scoring three times in a 12–9 final win over the same opponents. Despite her scoring feats, Tricha insisted the achievement was a collective one, stressing that “the goals are an outcome of the system of the team.”
The awards cap outstanding seasons for both players, who defined the 2025 international calendar by leading their nations to World Aquatics Championships glory.
