Hungary’s Women’s Water Polo Team Announces 2025 World Championship Preparation Squad

Following a thrilling bronze medal match, head coach Sándor Cseh has unveiled the Hungarian women’s national water polo team’s training roster for the upcoming 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. The squad features a blend of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, reflecting the team’s commitment to both experience and youth development.

Key Inclusions and Returns

The core of the team comprises players who secured a silver medal at the recent World Cup. Notably, the roster sees the return of:

  • Rita Keszthelyi: Hungary’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, bringing invaluable experience and leadership.
  • Dorottya Szilágyi: Back in action after recovering from a significant shoulder surgery, adding strength to the team’s offense.
  • Eszter Varró: Having completed her studies in the United States, Varró re-joins the national team, ready to contribute her international experience.

Coach Cseh emphasized the strategic composition of the squad, stating, “The roster reflects our goal to integrate new young players while relying on experienced athletes. The five-week preparation period is sufficient to gather extensive information on the players and foster their development. Our aim is to build a team capable of achieving success at the World Championships in Singapore.”

Training Schedule and Competitions

The team’s preparation commences on June 2, with training camps held domestically. The athletes will train in Sukoró and participate in the SEAT International Water Polo Tournament from June 24 to 26, with matches scheduled in Gödöllő and at the Hajós Alfréd National Sports Swimming Pool on Margaret Island.

World Championship Group Stage

Hungary’s campaign at the Singapore World Championships will begin with a match against Greece, followed by encounters with Croatia and Japan. The tournament runs from July 11 to 24, 2025, at the OCBC Aquatic Centre in Singapore.
