Igor Milanović Appointed as New Head Coach of Mladost

Legendary water polo figure Igor Milanović has been named the new head coach of Mladost Zagreb, following the departure of Damir Vincek.

Milanović, 58, is one of the most decorated individuals in the sport, having won the Champions League both as a player and coach—a rare achievement. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest water polo players of the 20th century.

Milanović’s playing career was illustrious, featuring stints with top clubs including Mladost Zagreb, Partizan, and Catalunya, where he secured two Champions League titles. As a coach, his resume is equally impressive, with successful tenures at Partizan, Pro Recco, and Olympiacos, among others. He has claimed domestic and international titles with nearly every club he has led, including Serbian, Turkish, Greek, and Italian championships, as well as the LEN Champions League with Partizan (2011) and Pro Recco (2015).

Mladost, who have struggled early this season, including a disappointing exit from the Champions League and a defeat in the Euro Cup opener, acted quickly to secure Milanović’s services. The Zagreb-based club hopes that his experience and tactical acumen will help reverse their fortunes.

“We agreed on everything in one day. I’m staying at least until the end of the season,” Milanović told Sport Klub in an interview, signaling his readiness to take on the challenge.

Milanović’s immediate task will be to stabilize the team and prepare for the upcoming Euro Cup matches.
