FTC completed a perfect Telekom Cup campaign in Budapest with a dramatic 14-12 comeback victory over Olympiacos, overturning a five-goal deficit to claim the inaugural tournament at the Nepliget.

Olympiacos made an excellent start to Saturday’s final game and raced into a 7-2 advantage midway through the second quarter. However, FTC responded emphatically, scoring five unanswered goals either side of half-time to level the contest at 7-7.

The Greek champions continued to edge ahead during the third period, but FTC remained within touching distance. Daniel Szakonyi made an important contribution after entering the Hungarian side’s goal at half-time, while Krisztian Manhercz levelled at 9-9 before the final quarter.

From there, the game developed into a tense exchange. Olympiacos twice responded after FTC moved ahead, with Takis Dimou making it 10-10 and later 11-11. Alexandros Papanastasiou then converted a penalty for 12-12 with less than two minutes remaining.

Manhercz ultimately proved decisive. The Hungarian international struck from distance with 1:23 remaining to restore FTC’s lead, completing an outstanding six-goal performance. After Olympiacos hit the post, Marton Vamos added his third goal of the game to seal the 14-12 victory.

The result completed an unbeaten three days for Balazs Nyeki’s side. FTC opened the tournament with an emphatic 28-7 victory over Brazil before defeating domestic rivals Vasas 15-9 on Friday.

Olympiacos also showed plenty of promise during their stay in Budapest. The Greek champions defeated Brazil 22-11 and Vasas 18-8 before their narrow loss to FTC, finishing the tournament with two victories from three matches.

Vasas took third after opening with a 15-12 win against Brazil, who finished the tournament without a victory.

For FTC, three wins from three — capped by a five-goal comeback against Olympiacos — ensured the first Telekom Cup remained in Budapest.
