Marseille completed one of the most successful seasons in the club’s history by defeating Strasbourg 19-10 to retain the French championship.
The victory secured a 2-0 win in the best-of-three final and completed an historic treble for Marseille, who had already lifted the French Cup and Euro Cup this season.
It is the club’s first official treble. Marseille also won the league and its first European trophy during the 2018/19 campaign, but the French Cup was not held that season.
After suffering a 20-7 home defeat in the opening match, Strasbourg produced a much stronger performance in Game 2. The visitors led 1-0 and 2-1 during the early stages before Marseille began to take control.
Strasbourg remained level at 5-5 midway through the second quarter, but the hosts finished the first half strongly to establish a 9-6 advantage.
Marseille then pulled clear after the interval, outscoring Strasbourg 10-4 across the final two quarters to complete a convincing 19-10 victory.
Veteran Ugo Crousillat led the champions with five goals, while Michael Bodegas and Thomas Bouet scored three apiece. Erik Molnar Nagy and Thomas Vernoux each added two.
The title is Marseille’s sixth in succession and 43rd overall. The French champions won 19 of their 20 league matches during the campaign.
Their only defeat came against Bordeaux in the final round of the regular season, when Marseille fielded a junior team while the senior squad prepared for the second leg of the Euro Cup final against Jadran Split.
Elsewhere, Pays d’Aix secured third place by completing a 2-0 series victory over Olympic Nice. After winning the opening match 12-10 away from home, Pays d’Aix claimed a 20-14 victory in Game 2.
Marseille will represent France in next season’s Champions League, while Strasbourg enter the qualifying rounds. Pays d’Aix qualify for the Euro Cup group stage, with Nice entering the competition’s qualifiers. Sete and Montpellier will compete in the Conference Cup.
