Olympiacos maintained their perfect start to the Greek Men’s Water Polo League with a comfortable 21-11 victory over Peristeri, while PAOK produced the standout result of Round 5 by defeating previously unbeaten Panionios 11-7 away from home.
Panathinaikos, Vouliagmeni, Apollon Smyrnis and Ethnikos also secured convincing victories as six of the round’s seven fixtures were completed.
Olympiacos extend unbeaten run
Defending champions Olympiacos recorded their fifth consecutive league victory with a ten-goal win over Peristeri in Piraeus.
Head coach Elvis Fatovic rested several important players, including Konstantinos Genidounias, Manos Zerdevas, Daniel Angyal and Loren Fatovic, ahead of Tuesday’s Champions League encounter against Jadran Herceg Novi.
Despite the changes, Olympiacos comfortably secured another three points to maintain their position at the top of the standings.
PAOK end Panionios’ unbeaten start
The biggest surprise came earlier in the week when PAOK defeated Panionios 11-7 in Nea Smyrni.
Panionios had won their opening four league matches, including an impressive 14-11 victory over Vouliagmeni, but struggled against a determined PAOK side.
The visitors established a 6-2 half-time advantage and extended their lead to 9-4 after three quarters.
Although Panionios attempted a late comeback, PAOK held firm to claim an important away victory.
Panathinaikos and Apollon impress
Panathinaikos secured their fourth league victory with a dominant 23-10 performance against Chios.
Dimitris Nikolaidis scored seven goals as the hosts built an early 10-2 advantage before eventually pulling clear in the final quarter.
The result provides encouragement ahead of Panathinaikos’ Champions League meeting with FTC on Wednesday.
Apollon Smyrnis also returned to winning ways following their heavy defeat against Olympiacos, beating Palaio Faliro 22-12 away from home.
Nikola Bogdanovic led the scoring with seven goals in an impressive attacking performance.
Elsewhere, Vouliagmeni defeated Glyfada 21-7, while Ethnikos secured a comfortable 14-7 victory against Ilisiakos after leading 12-1 at half-time.
With Olympiacos maintaining their perfect record and several contenders competing closely behind them, the early championship race continues to develop.
The final fixture of Round 5, between Chania and Ydraikos, is scheduled for 4 November.
