Olympiacos Take 1–0 Lead in Greek Women’s finals after stunning comeback

Olympiacos took a decisive first step toward claiming the Greek women’s water polo championship, edging rivals Vouliagmeni 10–8 in the opening match of the A1 finals at the Limni swimming pool. The reigning Greek champions and 2024–25 Cup winners now lead the best-of-five series 1–0, thanks to a heroic late-game surge powered by standout performer Vasiliki Plevritou, who scored four goals.

In a tightly contested opening final, Olympiacos showed resilience and championship pedigree. Despite trailing 8–7 in the fourth quarter, the Red-and-Whites mounted a remarkable turnaround, outscoring their hosts 5–1 in the final eight minutes. Plevritou led from the front, scoring twice in the closing moments, including a penalty shot that sealed the win with just 19 seconds left.

The second game of the series is set for Saturday (May 24) at 17:00 at Papastrateio pool, where Dimitris Kravaritis’ team will aim to go 2–0 up and move closer to completing a domestic double.

Match Breakdown

The opening quarter ended 3–3, with Olympiacos coming from behind three times through goals from Siouti, Andrews, and Myriokefalitaki. In the second period, they pushed ahead 5–3, thanks to strikes from Siouti and Plevritou, but Vouliagmeni rallied to equalize before halftime (5–5).

The hosts took control in the third quarter, capitalizing on offensive struggles from Olympiacos to build a 7–5 lead. However, the final period saw a dramatic shift.
