Since its founding in 1971, Otters ASC has been at the heart of aquatic sports in Gozo,
growing from humble beginnings into the island’s premier water polo and swimming club.
What began with training sessions in the open sea has transformed into a fully established
organisation with competitive teams across all age groups, proudly representing Gozo in
Malta’s fiercely competitive water polo landscape.
For Otters, water polo has always been more than a sport—it is a tradition, a passion, and a
way of life. Over the years, the club has built a reputation not only for producing strong
teams but also for cultivating a community where young athletes learn discipline, teamwork,
and resilience, while forging friendships that last a lifetime. Generations of Gozitans have
passed through the Otters’ ranks, creating a living legacy that binds current players with
alumni and supporters.

Nurturing Talent, Building Community
Otters ASC has played a central role in keeping water polo vibrant in Gozo. By offering a
platform for juniors to train and compete, the club ensures that young talent can develop
without needing to leave the island. Many players who began at Otters went on to make their
mark at the national level, showcasing the strength of Gozo’s sporting spirit.
The club has also been a hub of community life, embracing the social side of sport as much
as the competitive. From summer matches drawing passionate local crowds to social
gatherings that reinforce the bonds between players and supporters, Otters has always been
about more than just what happens in the water—it is about bringing people together.

Gozo on the International Stage
This November, Otters ASC will help bring Gozo’s sporting tradition to the world stage as co-
organisers of the first International Masters Water Polo Tournament. Taking place at the
newly built Gozo Aquatic Centre in Victoria from 28–30 November 2025, the tournament will
welcome veteran players from across the globe to compete in age categories 40+ and 50+.
With matches following the updated FINA rules, the event promises high-quality competition
while celebrating the camaraderie and spirit of Masters’ water polo. Beyond the pool,
participants will experience Gozo’s unique charm—its stunning Mediterranean landscapes,
rich culture, and famously warm hospitality. A special welcome event on November 29,
complete with food and an open bar, will further highlight the social and cultural side of the
tournament.

More Than Competition
For Otters, hosting this tournament is about more than matches and medals. It is about
friendship, cultural exchange, and shared experiences. Water polo in Malta has long been
one of the nation’s most beloved traditions, with packed stands and roaring crowds in the
summer. Now, international athletes will have the chance to immerse themselves in this
culture, experiencing firsthand the passion and community spirit that define the sport here.
As Paul Dimech reflects: “This tournament is a milestone for Gozo. It’s an opportunity to
showcase our island, strengthen bonds across borders, and celebrate the values that make
water polo special—discipline, teamwork, and above all, friendship.”
