Pavillard to represent Croatia as Australia confirms departure

Water Polo Australia has confirmed that Luke Pavillard has made himself available to represent Croatia in future international competitions, including the World Aquatics Championships and Olympic Games.

The decision comes as the 29-year-old left-handed attacker continues his professional career in Europe, having secured international club contracts and relocated permanently.

In a statement, Water Polo Australia said:

“Water Polo Australia has been advised by Luke Pavillard, that he is making himself available to represent Croatia for future international competitions, including World Aquatics Championships and Olympic Games.

Pavillard has decided to make the move after confirming international playing contracts and relocating to Europe to pursue a professional water polo career.”

Water Polo Australia’s General Manager of Performance, Andrew Pratley, also addressed the news:

“Naturally we are disappointed to lose Luke from our Ord Minnett Aussie Sharks squad. Luke is a great player and has provided a significant contribution to our national program. Whilst disappointed, we wish him well.”

Pavillard has been a key figure for the Aussie Sharks in recent years, and his departure marks a significant shift for the national team moving forward.

The move is understood to be linked to his continued career in Europe, with reports suggesting a switch to HAVK Mladost and a pursuit of Croatian citizenship.

Australia will now turn its focus to the upcoming World Aquatics Water Polo World Cup Division 2 in Malta (7–13 April), entering a new phase without one of its most dangerous attacking threats.
