Pro Recco has announced that Croatian coach Sandro Sukno has extended his contract with the club until 2028. The 34-year-old, who took over as head coach in the summer of 2021, has already guided the most decorated water polo team in the world to ten trophies during his tenure.
Expressing his gratitude, Sukno commented: “I thank the club for their trust and for allowing me to remain on the Pro Recco bench. It’s a great honor and an enormous responsibility because being here means you have to win. We know it won’t be easy—Savona and Brescia are very strong teams in Italy—but we’ve brought several young players into the roster and have been working to help them grow and integrate into the group since September.”
Sukno also reflected on the challenges ahead, particularly the upcoming Final Eight of the Italian Cup in Naples this March, where the team will face fierce competition. Despite the pressure, he remains focused on maintaining the team’s competitive edge and continuing their winning tradition.
Loyalty During Difficult Times
Sukno’s loyalty to Pro Recco was particularly evident during the challenging summer months. “When President [Maurizio] Felugo called to explain the financial difficulties we faced, I promised I would stay, even with a team of only young players,” Sukno revealed. “I’ve always seen Pro Recco as the pinnacle of ambition. As a young coach, I was given the opportunity to work with the best players in the world, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude that motivated me to stay. It was a decision from the heart.”
Since taking the helm, Sukno has led Pro Recco to remarkable success, including two Champions League titles, three Italian championships, two Italian Cups, and three LEN Super Cups. However, he remains humble, emphasizing the importance of staying hungry and motivated. “In sports, you must always maintain your grit and desire to move forward. There have been moments of triumph and some unexpected losses, but you always look beyond and find new motivation.”
Sukno also addressed comparisons to Pro Recco legend Pino Porzio, who holds the record for 23 trophies as head coach. “I’m not focused on breaking records. My focus is entirely on this season and on preparing for the next challenges. Our primary goal is to win the Champions League and compete for every trophy moving forward.”
A Testament to Excellence
President Maurizio Felugo expressed his pride in Sukno’s extension. “We are thrilled and proud that Sandro will continue with us for many more years. He has proven to be an incredible coach who will write the history of this sport even more than he did as a player. His loyalty to the club is an inspiring example for both new players and younger generations. Around him, with the support of the ownership, we will build an even stronger and hungrier Pro Recco, honoring the club’s glorious history.”
From Player to Coach: A Remarkable Journey
Sukno’s journey with Pro Recco began during his playing career, where he achieved significant success before being forced to retire in 2019 due to a heart condition. Following successful heart surgery, he transitioned to coaching, initially serving as an assistant to Croatia’s national team coach Ivica Tucak before making his club coaching debut with Primorac in Montenegro.
In 2021, Sukno returned to Pro Recco as head coach, where his tactical acumen and leadership have elevated the team to new heights. Under his guidance, the team has dominated both domestically and internationally, solidifying its status as the best in the world.
With Sukno now committed to Pro Recco until 2028, the club is poised to continue its legacy of excellence. Fans can look forward to witnessing more historic moments as the Croatian tactician leads the team into the future.
