Sydney University Lions have made a major statement ahead of the new Australian season, appointing former Serbia Olympic champion Slobodan Nikic as head coach of their men’s team.
The move takes one of European water polo’s most recognisable young coaches to Australia following the conclusion of his time with Hungarian giants Vasas.
Nikic spent several seasons in charge of Vasas, guiding the Budapest club back towards the top of both Hungarian and European water polo. His biggest success came in 2023, when Vasas lifted the Euro Cup, their first European trophy in more than two decades. He stepped down as head coach during the 2025/26 season, with Robert Kovacs taking over, while Nikic remained involved as sporting director.
Interestingly, Australia has been on Nikic’s radar before. Speaking about his coaching career in 2024, the Serbian revealed that he had received an offer to move to Australia in 2021, but at the time chose to remain in Hungary. Five years later, he will now make that move.
His appointment represents a significant coup for Sydney Uni. The Lions are one of the established names of Australian club water polo, with four men’s national league championships, most recently completing an undefeated title-winning season in 2018. The club finished with bronze in the 2025 Australian Waterpolo League but did not reach the six-team men’s Finals Series in 2026.
Nikic arrives with an extraordinary playing pedigree. The former centre-forward was part of Serbia’s golden generation, winning Olympic gold at Rio 2016 as well as Olympic silver in 2004 and bronze in 2012. He also won three World Championship titles and five European Championship gold medals during a hugely decorated international career.
At club level, Nikic represented some of Europe’s biggest sides, including Partizan, Olympiacos, Pro Recco and FTC Telekom, winning the Champions League with Ferencvaros in 2019 before ending his playing career in Hungary.
He subsequently moved into coaching, initially working with young players at FTC before establishing himself at senior level with Vasas. Nikic has previously spoken of his desire to combine elements of the Serbian and Hungarian water polo schools in his coaching philosophy, with a strong emphasis on teamwork, discipline and player development.
His arrival in Sydney now begins a completely new chapter, both for Nikic and for a Lions side looking to return to the top of Australian water polo.
