In a pivotal encounter during Round 16 of the Hungarian Water Polo League, Szolnok secured a significant 12:8 victory over Honved, maintaining their hold on second place in the standings. Meanwhile, Honved’s ambitions for a top-four finish have been dealt a serious blow following back-to-back losses, including a surprise defeat to Kaposvar earlier this week.
Elsewhere in the league, title contenders Ferencvaros, BVSC, Vasas, and OSC recorded key away victories to keep up their momentum in the race for playoff positions.
Szolnok dominates early to seal the win
The match’s turning point came in the second quarter. Szolnok, after leading 2:1 at the end of the first, unleashed a scoring blitz to build a commanding 9:3 halftime lead. Despite Honved’s efforts to narrow the gap, the damage had been done. Norman Schmolcz was instrumental with five goals, while Bence Szabo II chipped in with three. For Honved, Benjamin Hassels led the scoring with three goals.
BVSC survives late scare to defeat Szeged
BVSC claimed a narrow 11:10 victory in the most intense match of the day. The visitors burst out to a 5:2 lead, only for Szeged to rally and draw level by halftime at 5:5. BVSC reasserted control early in the third quarter with two quick goals, but Szeged kept it close until the final seconds. Akos Konarik’s four-goal performance proved decisive, while Zsombor Porge netted three for the hosts.
