Sandor Cseh has announced the Hungary squad that will travel to Funchal for the Women’s European Water Polo Championships.
From the team that won silver at the World Championships in Singapore, thirteen players have retained their places. Alongside them, two newcomers have been given their first opportunity at a senior major tournament: Tekla Aubeli and Szonja Golopencza. While neither has previously appeared at a senior European or World Championship, both have been regular members of the extended national team setup. The duo were key figures in Hungary’s U20 World Championship gold-winning team in 2023 and come into the squad in place of Kinga Peresztegi-Nagy and Luca Torma, who were part of the Singapore lineup.
The European Championships begin on January 26 in Funchal, with Hungary opening their campaign against Spain in a high-profile clash at 18:00. This will be followed by matches against Romania on January 27 (14:45) and Portugal on January 29 (16:30).
The competition format mirrors that of the men’s tournament, with one key difference: in the women’s event, the top two teams from each group advance to the main round, forming two new groups of four. Results against teams that also qualify are carried forward, and the top two from each main-round group progress to the semifinals. The Netherlands are expected to be Hungary’s strongest additional opponent in the next phase.
Hungary has finished 5th at the previous two European Championships.
