Barceloneta secured their 25th Spanish League title and capped off a flawless domestic season by defeating Sabadell 12:7 in the second match of the 2025 playoff finals. With this result, the reigning champions completed a perfect campaign — 26 wins from 26 games — and extended their historic title streak to 20 consecutive championships.
This latest triumph holds extra meaning for Felipe Perrone, one of the defining players of 21st-century water polo. The 38-year-old Barceloneta captain lifted his 17th and final Spanish League trophy, having announced his retirement at the end of this season.
Perrone began his career with two Spanish titles at Barcelona in 2004 and 2005 before moving to Barceloneta, where he added 15 more domestic championships. His impressive résumé also includes league titles in Croatia (Jug Dubrovnik) and Italy (Pro Recco).
Although this marks his final Spanish League appearance, Perrone will have one last shot at glory. In two weeks, he will lead Barceloneta into the Champions League Final Four in Malta. Whether he will feature for Spain at the upcoming World Championships remains uncertain.
Match Summary: Sabadell vs Barceloneta – Game 2
Unlike the one-sided first game (17:8), Sabadell put up stronger resistance at home. The opening quarter was tightly contested, with the hosts briefly leading 1:0 and 3:2 before it ended 3:3. Barceloneta pulled ahead with a three-goal burst to start the second quarter, but Sabadell responded and narrowed the deficit to 5:6 before halftime.
The first half saw a goal-for-goal battle between Sabadell and Álvaro Granados, who scored five of Barceloneta’s six goals in the opening 16 minutes.
In the third period, Sabadell’s Corres leveled the match at 6:6. But Barceloneta responded with another dominant 3:0 run. A goal from Gergely Burian made it 9:6 before Corres struck again (7:9). However, late goals from Granados and Perrone pushed the lead to four, and Munárriz sealed the final score at 12:7.
