British quartet impress in Women’s Champions League

Four British players featured in Women’s Champions League qualifying action over the weekend.

While none of their teams progressed to the next round of the Champions League, all four players played key roles for their sides, highlighting the growing strength of women’s water polo in the UK.

Great Britain’s Kathy Rogers and Toula Falvey (both CN Catalunya), along with Lily Turner (Glyfada), found themselves on opposite sides in Berlin as their clubs faced off. Glyfada emerged as the eventual winners, 13-11, with all three players making it onto the scoresheet. Turner was particularly impressive, netting five goals for the Greeks and finishing the qualifiers as the club’s top scorer with eight goals.

Annie Clapperton was also in Champions League action, representing Tenerife Echeyde in Padova. Her team wrapped up their campaign in the Italian city with two hard-fought victories, defeating Greek side Ethnikos 13-9 and Israeli side Hapoel Yoqneam 11-10.

There is an outside chance the next time we can hope to see the girls playing for Great Britain will be in January for the first stage of the World Cup.
