Dejan Savić appointed as Montenegro National Team Head Coach

Dejan Savić, one of the most successful coaches and prominent figures in the history of world water polo, has been appointed as the new head coach of Montenegro’s national team.

Savić becomes the fourth coach to lead Montenegro’s national squad, following in the footsteps of Petar Porobić, Ranko Perović, and Vladimir Gojković. Renowned for his impressive achievements both as a player and as a coach, Savić has left an indelible mark on the sport. His deep understanding of the game, tactical brilliance, and adaptability have earned him recognition as one of the most respected coaches in water polo history.

“Dejan is highly motivated and ready to lead our ‘Sharks’ to new successes,” stated the Montenegro Water Polo Federation.

During his decade-long tenure as Serbia’s head coach, Savić delivered outstanding results, including two Olympic gold medals (2016, 2021), three European Championship titles (2014, 2016, 2018), and a World Championship gold (2015). Under his leadership, Serbia claimed 17 medals between 2012 and 2022. As a club coach, he guided Red Star Belgrade to a European championship in 2013, while his playing career saw him secure 13 medals in major international competitions.

“It is an honor to have Savić, one of the world’s most esteemed coaches, join Montenegro,” said Nikola Milić, president of the Montenegro Water Polo Federation. “His passion for the game and ability to inspire players are crucial for us at this time. Moreover, we wanted a coach who understands the region’s culture and what this sport means to Montenegro, and Dejan embodies that.”

Savić himself expressed gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity:
“Receiving the call from Montenegro is a great honor and an exciting challenge. For years, we’ve been fierce competitors but also close friends, making this feel like coming home. This role is both a pleasure and a huge responsibility, and I am fully committed to achieving great results together.”

While still under contract with a club in Saudi Arabia, Savić’s dual commitment was made possible through an agreement allowing him to balance his club and national team responsibilities until June 2025, when his full focus will shift to Montenegro for the remainder of the Olympic cycle.

Savić’s first competitive challenge as Montenegro’s head coach will be the World Cup Division A Qualifying Tournament in Bucharest, scheduled from January 7–12, 2025.
