Olympiacos reclaim Greek crown with victory over Vouliagmeni

Olympiacos returned to the summit of Greek women’s water polo on Tuesday evening, defeating Vouliagmeni 10-7 in Laimos to seal a 3-1 series victory and reclaim the Women’s Water Polo League title.

After surrendering the championship to their rivals in the same pool last season, the Piraeus club responded in style, securing their 16th Greek championship and heading into next week’s Champions League Final Four in Malta with domestic silverware already secured.

The title-clinching victory was built on a strong second-half performance. With the teams level at 4-4 at halftime, Olympiacos gradually took control during the third quarter before pulling away in the final period to secure the win.

Vouliagmeni matched the visitors throughout the opening half, but Olympiacos’ defensive discipline and greater attacking efficiency proved decisive as the match progressed. The visitors outscored their hosts 4-2 in the final quarter to put the result beyond doubt.

Maria Myriokefalitaki led the Olympiacos attack with three goals, while Eirini Ninou and Vasiliki Plevritou each added two. Tricha and Andrews also found the net as Olympiacos completed the comeback season after last year’s disappointment.

For Vouliagmeni, Xenaki, Joustra and Moolhuijzen scored twice each, while Fountotou also found the net in a losing effort.

The championship marks another milestone in Olympiacos’ remarkable era of dominance. The club has now won 16 national titles, extending its lead over closest rival Vouliagmeni, who remain on 12 championships.

Attention now turns to Malta, where Olympiacos will bid for European glory at the Women’s Champions League Final Four. Having reclaimed the Greek title, Georgios Daskalakis’ side arrives with momentum and confidence as they chase another major trophy.
