Ethnikos Stun Catalunya as Trieste and De Zaan Claim Crucial Champions League Victories

The second day of the 2026/27 Women’s Champions League qualification round produced several dramatic encounters, with Ethnikos defeating reigning Euro Cup champions Catalunya, Trieste overcoming UVSE and De Zaan edging Dunaujvaros.

Six matches took place across four groups on Saturday, with the battle for the eight available group stage places continuing ahead of Sunday’s final fixtures.

Ethnikos Edge Catalunya in Greek Thriller

Greek side Ethnikos secured one of the biggest results of the qualification round, defeating reigning Euro Cup champions Catalunya 7-6 in Group C.

Having opened their campaign with a remarkable 28-6 victory over Grand Nancy, Ethnikos followed up with a considerably tighter encounter against the Spanish side.

The victory leaves Ethnikos in a commanding position heading into the final day, while Catalunya must respond in their remaining fixture against Grand Nancy.

Elsewhere in Group C, French side Grand Nancy claimed a dramatic 14-13 penalty shootout victory over hosts Glyfada, following a 10-10 draw in regulation time.

Trieste Defeat UVSE in Berlin

Italian side Trieste made an impressive start to their Champions League campaign with an 18-15 victory over Hungarian opponents UVSE.

UVSE had opened their qualification campaign with a convincing 18-7 victory over Spandau, but were unable to repeat that performance against the Italians.

The result leaves Trieste well placed ahead of their final encounter with Spandau on Sunday.

De Zaan Edge Dunaujvaros

Dutch side De Zaan secured a crucial 14-13 victory over Dunaujvaros in Group B.

The Hungarian hosts suffered their second consecutive narrow defeat, having previously lost 8-7 against Rapallo on Friday.

De Zaan will now face Rapallo in Sunday’s final group match, with both clubs looking to secure qualification.

Sabadell and Terrassa Continue Dominance

Spanish clubs Sabadell and Terrassa maintained their perfect records in Group D.

Sabadell followed their opening 26-4 victory over Donk with another commanding performance, defeating Lille 29-10.

Terrassa also recorded a second successive victory, overcoming Donk 16-9 after opening their campaign with a 25-7 win against Lille.
