Ferencvaros masterclass leaves Szolnok reeling

The big match of Day 20 of the Hungarian League was a clash between the former and the current European champions. However, the contest quickly turned one-sided. Ferencvaros, the reigning European and Hungarian champion, maintained their domestic supremacy by defeating Szolnok 16:7.

Spaniard Miguel de Toro opened the scoring with a 1:0 lead in Szolnok, only for the hosts to equalize in the 5th minute. That goal, however, proved to be Szolnok’s only bright spot in the first half. Ferencvaros then held the opposition goalless for 15 minutes, during which they netted eight unanswered goals. In the middle of the third period, “Fradi” led 9:1, decisively ending any suspense. With a 12:2 advantage after 24 minutes and a more measured final quarter, the visitors secured a comprehensive victory. Eight players from Ferencvaros found the net, with Dusan Mandic and Vendel Vigvari topping the scoresheet with three goals each. Following another impressive display by the European champions and a win over the 2nd-placed team in the Hungarian League, one question remains: “Can anybody beat Ferencvaros this season?”

Before this match, Szolnok was alone in 2nd place. Now, they share the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th positions with Vasas and OSC, both of whom recorded wins and closed the gap in the standings.

Miskolc, which upset BVSC a few days ago, was unable to replicate that success in their match against Vasas in Budapest. The hosts won by seven goals (16:9). Miskolc managed to stay competitive in the first half, trailing by just one goal at 6:7 at the end of the second quarter, but they ran out of steam thereafter. Montenegrin player Bogdan Djurdjic led Vasas’ attack with five goals.

OSC defeated Eger 16:11. The Budapest-based team made a crucial impact in the first half, establishing a 7:2 advantage after 11 minutes of play. They stifled all of Eger’s comeback attempts. Although the visitors narrowed the gap to two in the third quarter (7:9), OSC responded with two goals to enter the final quarter at 11:9. Lars ten Broek and Krisztof Varnai each contributed three goals to secure the win.

BVSC achieved a 20:11 victory over Kaposvar, despite the hosts putting up a strong fight in the first 16 minutes. After a balanced first half that ended in a 7:7 tie, BVSC dominated the third and fourth quarters, with David Tatrai scoring five goals for the visitors.
