Fran Fernández appointed head coach of Barceloneta

Zodiac CN Atlètic-Barceloneta have confirmed the appointment of Francisco “Fran” Fernández as the new head coach of the senior men’s team, following the departure of Elvis Fatović.

The 39-year-old Madrid native, one of the most decorated players in Barceloneta’s history, steps into the role after two seasons as assistant coach and head coach of the club’s youth team. His appointment marks the beginning of a new era at the Catalan powerhouse, as the club seeks to rejuvenate its project with renewed energy and ambition.

Fernández retired as a player following the 2023 Champions League Final Eight in Belgrade, closing a glittering playing career that spanned nearly two decades. After beginning his journey with Tres Cantos and Real Canoe, he made his senior debut with Barceloneta in 2004 and became a club legend. Apart from a brief spell with CN Mataró, he spent his entire top-level career in Barcelona, helping the club win an extraordinary 65 titles, including the historic 2014 Champions League.

A silver medalist with Spain at the 2019 World Championships and the European Championships in 2018 and 2020, Fernández was known for his intelligence in the water — a quality that has translated naturally into his coaching.

Barceloneta officially retired his cap in 2024 and awarded him the club’s prestigious Insígnia d’or blanc (White Gold Insignia), underlining his legacy.

The club described Fran as “a true student of the game, a great communicator, and someone who understands the essence of CNAB.” His promotion comes at a time of transition, as Barceloneta look to build a new identity while maintaining their position at the summit of Spanish water polo and challenging again for continental honours.
