Francisco “Fran” Fernández, one of the most decorated players in Barceloneta’s history, is expected to become the club’s next head coach following the anticipated departure of Elvis Fatovic.
Fernández, 39, played his final match at the 2023 Champions League Final Eight in Belgrade, just two years ago. Born in Madrid, Fernández began his water polo journey with Tres Cantos and Real Canoe before making his senior debut with Barceloneta in 2004. Aside from a one-year spell with CN Mataró, he spent nearly two decades with the Catalan powerhouse, becoming a central figure in their domestic and international dominance.
Among his many achievements, Fernández helped Barceloneta capture the 2014 LEN Champions League title — the club’s first and only European crown to date. On the international stage, he was a key member of the Spanish national team, winning silver medals at the 2019 World Championships and the European Championships in 2018 and 2020.
Since 2023, Fernández has served as assistant coach to Elvis Fatović at Barceloneta. With Fatović’s departure nearly confirmed, multiple sources suggest Fernández is the frontrunner to take over the head coach role. The transition would mark a natural progression for a player who has spent the majority of his career immersed in the club’s culture and philosophy.
Should the appointment be finalised, Fernández would be tasked with guiding a new era for Barceloneta, as they look to build on their domestic success and return to the top of European water polo.
