Gonzalo Echenique returns to Barceloneta

In one of the most significant moves of the summer, CN Atlètic-Barceloneta have officially confirmed the return of Gonzalo Echenique—nearly a decade after he first left the club for Pro Recco.

The 35-year-old left-hander, known across the water polo world as “Chalo,” rejoins the Catalan side with a legacy few can match. A four-time Champions League winner and six-time Italian champion, Echenique brings a wealth of experience at both club and international level, having represented Argentina, Spain, and most recently Italy.

Echenique returns to Sant Sebastià at the end of his contract with Pro Recco, where he has been a cornerstone of the team since 2015. During his time in Liguria, he won every major honour in the sport and cemented his reputation as one of the most versatile and intelligent players on the right side of the pool.

Barceloneta have moved decisively to bring back the player who helped guide them to their only Champions League title in 2014. The club is currently undergoing a rebuild, and Echenique’s return marks a major statement of intent as they aim to re-establish themselves among Europe’s top sides.

Despite his age, Echenique remains a high-impact performer, known for his elite shooting, game management, and tactical awareness. His leadership and familiarity with the club will be invaluable assets for Xavi García’s team as they prepare for the 2025–26 campaign.

His signing follows the club’s reported interest in another Italian international, Alessandro Velotto, as Barceloneta continues to reinforce its roster with seasoned, high-level talent.
