In what could be one of the biggest transfer twists of the summer, multiple sources close to the situation suggest that Gonzalo Echenique may be on the verge of a sensational return to Barceloneta—nearly a decade after he first left the Catalan powerhouse for Pro Recco.
The 35-year-old veteran, affectionately known as “Chalo,” is one of water polo’s most decorated and versatile players, with four Champions League titles, six Italian Championships, and three international careers under his belt (Argentina, Spain, and now Italy).
His potential departure from Pro Recco—where he’s been a key figure since 2015—would mark the end of an era for the Ligurian giants and possibly the start of a new chapter back in Spain.
With his contract reportedly set to expire this summer, Barceloneta has emerged as a front-runner for his signature, keen to reunite with a player who helped deliver their only Champions League title back in 2014.
Barceloneta, meanwhile, are actively rebuilding after several seasons falling short in Europe. Club officials have not confirmed any discussions, but Echenique’s deep ties to the club, as well as his Spanish citizenship, make a return plausible.
A return to Sant Sebastià would not only electrify the Barceloneta faithful, but also offer the club a battle-tested left-hander with big-game pedigree and a sharp tactical mind. Despite his age, Echenique has remained a top performer in Serie A1 and the Champions League, known for his elite shooting, game vision, and ability to play anywhere on the right side of the pool.
Whether this move materializes or not, it underscores a broader theme in this summer’s transfer window: Europe’s top clubs are seeking proven winners with leadership credentials. And few fit that profile better than Chalo.
