The opening day of the Women’s U-20 World Championship in Salvador, Brazil, took an unexpected and frightening turn when the Group B clash between China and Canada was temporarily halted due to gunshots outside the venue.
Midway through the match, loud reports echoed through the complex, prompting immediate concern among players, officials, and fans. Athletes instinctively scrambled for cover, many crouching behind advertising boards, while spectators dropped to the ground. Referees quickly stopped play to ensure the safety of everyone present.

Tournament organisers later confirmed that the shots were not linked to the competition itself. Police had fired into the air outside the venue in an attempt to deter a suspected thief. No injuries were reported among players, staff, or spectators.
After security officials gave the all-clear, the match resumed, with China going on to claim a 12–8 victory over Canada.
While the incident caused a tense beginning to the tournament, organisers stressed that all players, officials, and fans are safe, and matches will continue as scheduled.
