In a stunning turn of events, Hungarian water polo legend Dénes Varga has come out of retirement to sign with Los Angeles Athletic Club (LAAC) for the 2025 USA Water Polo National League season.
The 37-year-old icon, who had announced his retirement following the Paris Olympics, will now take his talents to the United States, marking a new chapter in his illustrious career.
Varga, widely regarded as one of the most skilled and creative players in the history of the sport, had initially declared his intention to retire after winning the Champions League with Ferencváros in June 2024. Following Hungary’s bronze medal match against Team USA at the Olympics, he hinted at the possibility of extending his career if the right opportunity presented itself.
“I’m leaving a very small door open in case someone thinks they’re supporting me as a patron by playing in a weaker league. Regardless, if no such requests come in the next few months, then it’s okay to let it go,” Varga said at the time.
It appears that door has now swung wide open, as LAAC officially announced the signing on its Instagram page, calling it a “historic signing” and solidifying its intent to compete at the highest level in the USA Water Polo National League.
Varga’s resume speaks for itself. A two-time world champion (2013, 2023), European champion (2020), and three-time Champions League winner (2017, 2019, 2024), he has dominated at every level of the sport. His Olympic triumph in 2008 with Hungary and bronze medal finish in Tokyo 2021 only add to his legendary status.
Having played for top clubs like Vasas, Primorje Rijeka, Szolnok, and Ferencváros, Varga now embarks on his second overseas venture, bringing his wealth of experience to LAAC. The American club finished fourth in the 2024 draft of the eight-team National League and is looking to make a strong push with Varga at the helm.
The signing of Varga is a statement not only for LAAC but for American water polo as a whole. His vision, playmaking, and scoring ability will provide an immense boost to the team’s ambitions.
“AAC x @ducko.us is making waves like never before—DÉNES VARGA is joining the squad for the 2025 USA Water Polo National League!” LAAC proudly declared.
With this acquisition, LAAC positions itself as a serious contender in the league. Fans will be eager to see Varga bring his trademark magic to the pool, dazzling audiences and inspiring the next generation of American water polo players.
