Hungary has named a 22-player preliminary squad for the start of its European Championship preparations, which will begin on 17 December. The group includes the core of the team that won silver at the World Championships in Singapore, alongside several young talents brought in to compete for roster spots.
This year marks a return to the traditional format in which the men’s and women’s European Championships are held separately. The women’s tournament will begin on 26 January in Madeira, following the conclusion of the men’s event in Belgrade.
Head coach Sándor Cseh explained that the staff focused on positional needs when adding younger players to the established group. Among the call-ups are two emerging prospects, Kinga Alaksza and Barbara Füle, who will train with the national team until departure.
“We tested many players throughout the year in both matches and training. Those who are not included now may have another chance in the spring during the World Cup qualifiers. For the European Championship, we brought in young players specifically for certain positions alongside the World Championship squad. Preparation time is short, so we are starting with a smaller group, but competition for places will still be strong. The highlight of our camp will be a joint training block with the U.S. national team,” Cseh said.
Hungary will train domestically throughout the preparation period. From 11–18 January, the team will host the USA for a combined training camp, including two official matches on 15 and 17 January.
At the European Championship in Funchal, Hungary will face:
- Spain on 26 January (18:00 CET),
- Romania on 27 January (14:45 CET),
- Portugal on 28 January (16:30 CET).
