Iris Wolves bids farewell to Dutch National Water Polo Team

After seven years of competing at the highest level, Iris Wolves has announced her retirement from the Dutch national water polo team.

The Polar Bears stalwart has accumulated over 100 international caps, playing a pivotal role in the Netherlands’ success across multiple global tournaments. Wolves, known for her intelligence in the water and versatility, leaves behind an illustrious career, both on the international stage and in domestic competition.

Wolves made her debut for the Dutch senior team in 2017 and quickly established herself as an indispensable member of the squad. Her leadership and experience have been critical assets for TeamNL, particularly during pivotal tournaments such as the 2018 and 2024 European Championships, the 2023 World Championship, and two Olympic Games.

Wolves’ career highlights include a gold medal at the 2023 World Championship in Fukuoka, Japan, and a bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She also played a key role in securing gold at the 2018 European Championships in Barcelona and silver at the 2023 World Cup in Long Beach. Over the years, her presence in the team was a consistent source of inspiration, especially for younger players.

Though Wolves is stepping away from international water polo, she will continue her career with Polar Bears, with whom she won the Dutch national title in 2018, the KNZB Cup in 2019, and the Supercup in 2023. She has also had successful stints abroad, playing in Spain for CE Mediterrani and in Greece for Glyfada.

Technical director Arno Havenga praised Wolves’ contribution to Dutch water polo, stating, “Iris has brought a lot to the women’s water polo team with her personality and qualities. We enjoyed the years that Iris represented the Dutch team. I wish her all the best at Polar Bears and with her social career.”
