Istanbul to host back-to-back U16 European Championships this summer

Istanbul is set to become the epicentre of youth water polo this summer as it hosts both the men’s and women’s U16 European Water Polo Championships.

The tournaments will be held consecutively, with the women’s event scheduled from 27 June to 3 July, followed by the men’s competition from 7 to 13 July.

Originally planned to take place in Manisa, the events have been relocated to Türkiye’s largest city following a decision by the Türkiye Water Polo Federation and approval from European Aquatics. The move highlights Istanbul’s growing status as a key destination for major aquatic events.

The city, which recently hosted the final of the Women’s Challenger Cup as well as the World Cup Division 2 events in December 2024, continues to strengthen its position on the European water polo map. With rising domestic interest in the sport and increasing success on the international stage, Türkiye is making a strong push to nurture the next generation of talent.

This summer’s U16 Championships will bring together the most promising young athletes from across the continent, offering fans a glimpse of future stars in action. With two weeks of high-level youth competition ahead, Istanbul promises an exciting and vibrant atmosphere both in and out of the pool.
