Italy capture historic third straight World University Games title with 16–12 win over USA

Italy secured a landmark third consecutive World University Games gold medal, defeating Team USA 16–12 in the final in Duisburg.

The victory completes a hat-trick of titles following triumphs in Naples (2019) and Chengdu (2023), and adds a sixteenth medal (6 gold, 4 silver, 6 bronze) to Italy’s illustrious Universiade record. It also marks the fifth straight edition in which the Azzurri have stood on the podium, reinforcing their dominance at this level.

A decisive third-quarter surge

The final began at a frenetic pace, with the opening quarter finishing level at 4–4 as both sides exchanged goals and defensive stops. The pattern continued into the second period until captain Occhione struck late, giving Italy a slender 8–7 advantage at halftime.

The turning point came in the third quarter. Outscoring the USA 6–2, Italy seized control to take a commanding 14–9 lead into the final eight minutes. Balzarini and Carnesecchi were ruthless on the counterattack, while Faraglia’s finishing provided the cushion they needed. Despite a late American rally, Fiorillo’s side held firm, closing out a 16–12 victory that turned Duisburg blue in celebration.

Relentless offence, disciplined defence

Italy’s success was built on balance at both ends of the pool. Across their six matches, the Azzurri scored an impressive 138 goals while conceding just 49. Captain Occhione and Gullotta led the way with 18 goals apiece, with Carnesecchi just behind on 17.

“We came here with a target on our backs after Naples and Chengdu,” said head coach Fiorillo. “The team showed character and quality in every game. Tonight, the third quarter summed up our mentality—we stayed composed, trusted our systems, and the result followed.”

Germany take bronze in a shootout classic

The bronze medal match delivered its own drama as hosts Germany edged Hungary 21–20 in a penalty shootout after a 14–14 draw in regulation.

A golden era for Italian university water polo

Three consecutive golds have cemented Italy’s reputation as the benchmark in men’s university water polo. A deep talent pool combining domestic standouts and players competing abroad has given the Azzurri unmatched consistency. For Fiorillo, who has guided the team through this golden era, the latest triumph carries special meaning:

“It’s not just about winning gold; it’s about sustaining a culture of excellence. That’s what makes this achievement so significant.”
