Water Polo Canada has announced the appointment of Olympic silver medallist and Vouliagmeni coach Kyriaki Liosi as the new Head Coach of the Senior Women’s National Team.
A former captain of the Greek national team, Liosi brings an extraordinary pedigree to Canada, both as a decorated athlete and a successful coach. She represented Greece at two Olympic Games (Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008), winning silver on home soil in 2004. Her international playing career includes five appearances at the FINA (now World Aquatics) World Championships, highlighted by a gold medal in 2011 and a fourth-place finish in 2009.
In addition, Liosi claimed gold at the 2005 World League, silver medals at the 2010 and 2012 European Championships, and competed in both the World Cup and World League Super Finals. At club level, she played for top Greek teams including Olympiacos, Glyfada, and Vouliagmeni, achieving notable success with Vouliagmeni by winning back-to-back Champions Cups and Super Cups in 2009 and 2010.
After retiring from playing, Liosi transitioned into coaching, building an impressive résumé over the past 13 years. She began with youth and assistant roles at the Vouliagmeni Nautical Club before taking over as Head Coach of the Senior Women’s Team in 2022. Under her leadership, Vouliagmeni won the 2025 Greek A1 Women’s Championship, defeating Olympiacos in the finals.
“I am truly honoured to join Water Polo Canada and lead the Women’s National Team,” said Liosi. “Water polo has shaped who I am, and I’m excited to bring that passion to this talented group. Teamwork is the foundation of success, and I look forward to working closely with the athletes and staff as we pursue our shared goals. I’m proud to have this opportunity to contribute to the continued success of Team Canada on the world stage.”
Liosi, who holds a degree in Physical Education and Sport Science with a specialization in water polo from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, will work on a part-time basis with Water Polo Canada.
“As our Senior Women’s National Team enters a new Olympic cycle, we are delighted to welcome a top-level coach like Kyriaki Liosi,” said Olivier Pineau, Water Polo Canada’s High Performance Director. “Her leadership, international experience, and coaching expertise will be instrumental in elevating the women’s program and building a sustainable high-performance system for the future.”
