Margarita Plevritou joins Panionios

In a seismic shift within Greek women’s water polo, Margarita Plevritou has officially signed with Panionios for the 2025–2026 season, departing from perennial powerhouse Olympiacos. The move marks a new chapter for both the player and the ambitious Athens-based club, who have declared the signing as a “very big transfer” for their women’s team.

The 29-year-old utility player brings with her a résumé that speaks volumes. A decorated former captain of Olympiacos, Plevritou has amassed a staggering collection of titles:
11 Greek Championships
6 Greek Cups
2 Greek Super Cups
3 Champions League titles
1 LEN Trophy
3 European Super Cups

Beyond her club success, Plevritou has been a key figure for the Greek national team, earning 238 international caps and scoring 144 goals. Her international accolades include:
Gold at the 2012 Junior World Championships (Perth)
Bronze at the 2013 Junior World Championships (Volos)
Gold at the 2018 Europa Cup (Pontevedra)
Silver at the 2018 and 2022 European Championships
Bronze at the 2024 European Championships (Eindhoven)
Bronze at the 2012 World League (Changshu)
Bronze at the 2018 Mediterranean Games (Tarragona)

Panionios, also known as “Historikos,” lauded the transfer as a significant step in their development strategy, not only for the immediate strength it adds to the first team, but also for the mentorship and experience Plevritou is expected to provide to the club’s younger players.

“Margarita’s resume and what she has achieved over the years is enormous in weight and depth,” the club said in its announcement.

Having worn the red cap of Olympiacos for more than a decade, Plevritou’s move marks a rare intra-Greek transfer between two rivals and signals Panionios’ intent to challenge more seriously on the domestic and continental stage.
