Francesco Cassia joins Pro Recco

Pro Recco have officially confirmed the signing of Francesco “Ciccio” Cassia, one of Italy’s most exciting young talents. The 22-year-old, born on 29 March 2002, arrives from Ortigia after a standout season in Serie A1, where he netted 72 goals and proved himself as one of the league’s most prolific scorers.

Cassia, who made his top-flight debut at just 15 years old, has signed a three-year deal with the reigning Italian champions. His impressive form has earned him a spot in Alessandro Campagna’s Settebello squad for the upcoming World Championships in Singapore, beginning in just ten days.

“This move was supposed to happen a year ago, but the wait has only made me hungrier,” Cassia said. “It’s every child’s dream to wear the white and blue cap and play alongside so many champions at the best club in the world. I’m here to win, but also to grow. Everyone speaks so highly of Sukno, and I’m excited to train under him and alongside teammates of this calibre.”

Interestingly, Cassia may be deployed in a more defensive role at Recco — a challenge he welcomes. “Getting out of my comfort zone is motivating. If the club sees potential in me playing a different position, it shows they believe in me.”

Water polo is in Cassia’s blood. He follows in the footsteps of his father, Giuseppe, who played for Pro Recco in the 1988–89 season. “He told me to stay grounded, not be too shy, and always listen to the coach,” Francesco shared.

One of the defining moments of Cassia’s early career also came against his new club. “In my second-ever Serie A1 match, at 15, I was subbed in against Pro Recco. I was in position 1, and suddenly Sukno was in front of me. He got the ball, beat me, and scored. That’s the spirit of a champion — it doesn’t matter who’s in front of you; you give 100%. That’s the mentality I want to adopt now at Recco.”

Cassia is particularly eager to play alongside Francesco Di Fulvio, his long-time idol. “I’ve always looked at him differently — he plays my position and I grew up watching his moves. Then there’s Tempesti, a legend who I got to know in Siracusa and who has always supported me. He gave me advice when he heard about this move. And of course, Valentino Gallo — from Siracusa like me — is a true hero. He and Tempesti helped raise me. I’m also happy to reunite with Ciccio Condemi, who I grew up with in the pool.”

Cassia’s arrival is not just a new signing — it’s the start of a new generation at Pro Recco. With his mix of humility, hunger, and heritage, “Ciccio” Cassia looks ready to leave his own mark on the sport’s most decorated club.
