Masters water polo will feature at the 2026 European Aquatics Masters Championships, hosted jointly by Slovakia and Austria from 19–30 August 2026. It will be the first standalone Masters Championships, the first held across two countries, and, for the first time, the event will be open to athletes with disabilities.
For water polo, this is more significant than it might initially seem.
A proper platform for Masters water polo
Masters water polo has often been squeezed into the shadow of bigger events. In 2026, it gets a full championship environment:
- Group stages and matches at Pasienky Pool in Bratislava
- Finals at the X-BIONIC® Sphere, one of Europe’s best high-performance aquatics venues
This is the same site that has hosted European U23 and Junior events — a serious stage for a Masters community that rarely gets this level of visibility.
A historic step for inclusion
For the first time at a European Masters water polo event, athletes with visual, hearing, physical and intellectual impairments will be allowed to compete.
That matters:
- It opens the door for mixed-ability teams
- It gives clubs with adaptive programmes a continental competition to aim for
- And it finally aligns water polo with inclusion standards already common in other sports
A growing Masters community
European Aquatics expects a record number of participants, and water polo will likely benefit. The Masters scene has been expanding fast across Central Europe; a cross-border event in Bratislava–Šamorín–Graz makes travel easier for clubs and dramatically increases potential entry numbers.
What is means for Water Polo?
- More opportunities: UK, European and expat players get another high-quality Masters event to target.
- Better visibility: Masters water polo rarely gets top-tier venues — this changes that.
- Inclusive growth: Adaptive and disability-inclusive teams finally have a continental pathway.
