Olympiacos Women’s water polo team have taken the A1 Championship finals to a decisive fifth game, after a commanding 10-7 victory over arch-rivals Vouliagmeni at a packed Papastrateio swimming pool in Piraeus.
The reigning Greek champions and 2024–25 Cup winners came into Game 4 trailing 2-1 in the series, but delivered a passionate performance in front of their home crowd to level the series. Led by a sensational five-goal display from Vasiliki Plevritou and a strong outing from goalkeeper Mia Rycraw Olympiacos stayed composed in a tense second half to secure the win.
Strong start sets the tone
Olympiacos flew out of the gates with goals from Siouti and Ninou, finishing the first quarter 2-1 up. In the second period, Vasiliki Plevritou’s brace — including a penalty — widened the lead, with further strikes from Ninou and Tornarou giving the home side a 6-2 advantage at the break.
Vouliagmeni, however, mounted a strong comeback in the third quarter, scoring three unanswered goals to close the gap to 6-5. But a critical goal from Plevritou in the final seconds of the period steadied Olympiacos and shifted the momentum back in their favour.
Late push seals it
Despite Vouliagmeni cutting the deficit to just one (8-7) in the final minutes, Olympiacos showed resilience. Plevritou netted again with under 30 seconds to play, followed swiftly by Ninou’s third goal to close out the game 10-7.
The result sends the A1 title race to a thrilling fifth and final game on Saturday, May 31 (17:00 local time) at Vouliagmeni’s home pool in Laimos. Olympiacos, coached by Dimitris Kravaritis, now chase the domestic double, while Vouliagmeni will be looking to secure their first league title since 2013.
