Multiple sources are reporting that Pro Recco’s left-handed wing, Luke Pavillard, is set to join Mladost Zagreb and pursue Croatian citizenship, with the aim of representing Croatia in the future.
The 29-year-old Australian international has established himself as one of the most dangerous left-handed attackers in world water polo. He joined Pro Recco last summer following a prolific spell in Australia and has played an important role in the Italian side’s continued success this season.
Prior to his move to Italy, Pavillard also featured for Barceloneta, where he collected multiple domestic titles and gained valuable experience at the highest level of European competition.
If completed, the move would represent a significant step for both player and club. Mladost, a seven-time European champion, has been rebuilding its ambitions in recent seasons and is currently competing in the Champions League Quarter Final Stage. The addition of Pavillard would provide a major boost to their attacking options.
Reports also suggest that the agreement could include financial backing linked to national team involvement, reflecting a model seen in other federations.
Should Pavillard complete the nationality switch, he would become the third naturalised left-hander to represent Croatia, following Xavier García and Konstantin Kharkov. His arrival would further strengthen a national team that remains one of the most consistent medal contenders in international water polo.
Under current World Aquatics regulations, athletes are required to observe a 12-month waiting period between representing different countries, alongside meeting residency requirements. This means that, if the process is completed in the coming months, Pavillard could potentially be eligible for Croatia at major competitions from 2027 onwards.
His potential switch also highlights an ongoing trend within Croatian water polo, with the national team continuing to rely on naturalised left-handed players to fill a key tactical role.
