FTC-Telekom Waterpolo has announced that Soma Vogel will lead the men’s water polo team as its new captain, after the departure of Dénes Varga at the end of the last season.
The 27-year-old goalkeeper, who has spent his entire career with the club, was chosen by head coach Balázs Nyéki for his embodiment of Fradi values and his leadership qualities.
Vogel, who grew up at the club, admitted to being surprised when first approached for the role. “I didn’t end the last club season thinking I’d be named captain, especially after the Olympics,” Vogel shared. “But after some reflection, I decided to take on the role because I see myself in it. The support from my teammates and loved ones, especially my girlfriend, has been incredible.”

Having been with Ferencváros since his youth, Vogel’s journey from training in the small pools of Népliget to captaining one of Europe’s top water polo teams symbolizes the club’s values of hard work, humility, and loyalty. “I hope I can set an example for young players—showing that with effort and integrity, anyone can make it to the first team,” Vogel said.
A Natural Leader for Ferencvaros
Balazs Nyeki, who coached the team to a Champions League victory, highlighted Vogel’s character as pivotal in his decision. “Soma is one of the most genuine choices for captain. He has grown up in Nepliget, has never played for another club, and perfectly represents what it means to be part of Fradi. His leadership will not only benefit the team but also enhance his personal growth.”

Since making his debut in 2014, Vogel has become one of the top goalkeepers in the world, known for his composure in high-pressure penalty duels. His impressive list of achievements includes two Champions League titles, five Hungarian championships, and a World Championship title with the national team in 2023.
Stepping Into Big Shoes
Vogel succeeds legendary captains such as Norbert Madaras and Denes Varga but is determined to bring his own leadership style. “Every captain has been different—whether it was Madi with his intelligence or Dumi with his brilliance. I’ll lead in my own way, even though my role as a goalkeeper is a bit different from previous captains who were more involved in attack. My goal is to set an example and keep pushing the team forward.”
Vogel’s first match as captain was successful, with a 23-7 win in the season opener against Debrecen on September 17. But Vogel knows his first major test will be the European Super Cup clash against Jug Dubrovnik on October 5.
With his deep roots in the club and years of success under his belt, Vogel’s appointment signals a new era for Ferencvaros, one that continues the club’s proud tradition of nurturing homegrown talent.
