Three-time Olympian Alex Obert announces retirement

Alex Obert, a three-time Olympian and 2024 Paris bronze medalist, has announced his retirement from the U.S. men’s national water polo team.

At 32, Obert retires after a remarkable career, which includes three Pan American Games gold medals and two World League Super Final silver medals. He spent nearly a decade representing Team USA on the international stage.

In the United States, Obert played for the University of the Pacific (2011-2016) and the New York Athletic Club. Professionally, he enjoyed successful stints with VK Jug in Croatia and Hydraikos in Greece.

Reflecting on his career, Obert said, “Water polo has given me so much over the last 20 years, culminating in the honor of becoming an Olympic medalist. I couldn’t have imagined the incredible journey it would be or the amazing people I’d meet along the way.”

USA men’s team head coach Dejan Udovicic praised Obert’s dedication and work ethic. “He is the example of hard work meeting opportunity,” Udovicic said. “He wasn’t the most recruited athlete and didn’t play at the most famous school, but he wanted to be great and put in the hours. He did whatever our team needed. I’m very pleased he was able to join us again for the road to Paris, ending his career with a bronze medal. I’m proud to have been his coach. I thank him for all he did for Team USA and wish him and his family the best.”

In his final message, Obert offered advice for young athletes: “Chase your dreams, embrace the hard work, and cherish every moment.”
