Adrian Weinberg, one of the breakout stars of the 2024 Paris Olympics, is strongly linked with a move to Panathinaikos. Sources suggest the U.S. national team goalkeeper is close to agreeing terms with the Athens-based club.
The 23-year-old currently plays for Chios in Greece. However, Panathinaikos is reportedly ready to make a big offer to secure his signature for the upcoming season.
A Rising Star in the Pool
Weinberg made his name at the University of California, Berkeley. Originally planning to redshirt, he quickly earned the starting goalkeeper role as a freshman. From there, he became a key player for the Golden Bears.
He won three straight NCAA national championships and was named an All-American multiple times. In his final college season, he recorded 200 saves and led Cal to another title.
Olympic Heroics
Weinberg’s international résumé is just as impressive. He has represented the U.S. at junior and senior levels since 2015. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, he was named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. His stats were outstanding—he led the tournament in total saves, saved two penalties in each of two shootouts, and even scored a goal. Team USA finished third, beating Hungary in a dramatic 11–8 shootout for the bronze.
A Familiar Face at Panathinaikos
If the deal goes through, Weinberg will reunite with Nikolaos Papanikolaou, a former Cal teammate. The pair won NCAA titles together and share a strong on-field connection.
Panathinaikos are building a formidable team. They recently signed Dimitrios Skoumpakis, a key defender for the Greek national team. The 27-year-old arrived from Novi Beograd and signed a 2+1 year contract in the presence of club president Dimitris Vranopoulos.
Gkiouvetsis Also Linked
In addition to Weinberg, Konstantinos Gkiouvetsis is also expected to join Panathinaikos. The 25-year-old attacker from Chios has yet to confirm the move, but negotiations are ongoing.
Panathinaikos Send a Message
The club’s aggressive transfer moves show they are serious about challenging Olympiacos and Vouliagmeni in the A1 Ethniki. With top-level Greek players and a world-class goalkeeper possibly joining the squad, Panathinaikos look ready to compete in both domestic and European competitions.
An official announcement regarding Weinberg is still pending. But all signs point to the Olympic star wearing green next season.
