Vasas produced the comeback of the second round of the Hungarian Men’s League on Wednesday, recovering from five goals down to beat Szolnok 12-11, while Ferencvaros, BVSC, OSC and Honved all maintained perfect starts to the new campaign.

The headline game came in Szolnok, where the hosts appeared to have complete control during the opening half. Szolnok allowed just two Vasas goals across the first 16 minutes and, shortly after the restart, moved 7-2 ahead.

But the contest changed dramatically from there.

Goals from Peter Szalai, Tamas Gyarfas and Marton Nagy pulled Vasas back into contention, with the visitors reducing the deficit to just one by the end of the third period. Szalai then converted from five metres to level early in the fourth before Bence Batori put Vasas ahead at 9-8 – their first lead since the opening stages. Vasas eventually completed the turnaround with a 12-11 victory, having scored ten times in the second half. Szalai led the winners with four goals, while Gyarfas added three.

Defending champions Ferencvaros had a much more straightforward evening in Szentes, recording a 22-8 victory.

Balazs Nyeki’s side established a 5-2 lead after the opening quarter and were seven ahead by half-time. Vendel Vigvari was the standout scorer with seven goals, four of them arriving before the interval, while Zsombor Vismeg added four. Ferencvaros also handed league debuts to several younger players as they controlled the game throughout.

BVSC joined Ferencvaros on six points with another convincing performance, beating UVSE 24-10. After the teams were level at 2-2, BVSC scored four unanswered goals to take control and steadily increased the margin from there. Zsombor Szeghalmi scored six and Zsombor Ekler added five for Daniel Varga’s side.

OSC also made it two wins from two with a 16-11 victory away to Szeged.

The Budapest side raced into an early advantage and led 6-2 after a prolonged Szeged scoring drought. The hosts fought back to 8-6 by half-time and were within three entering the final period, but OSC pulled clear again. Sebastian Hessels produced the decisive attacking display with six goals, while David Gal scored four.

Last season’s finalists Honved remained perfect as well, although Eger made them work for their 13-8 victory. Honved led 4-1 early, only for Eger to recover and level at 6-6 shortly after half-time. The visitors responded with four consecutive goals to regain control before closing out the win. Kevi, Lazar Vickovic and Balazs Ekler each scored three for Honved.

The other close contest came in Kaposvar, where the hosts secured their first league victory of the season by edging Debrecen 13-12.

Kaposvar turned a 4-4 first quarter into a commanding 12-7 advantage by the end of the third, but Debrecen produced a furious final-quarter rally, outscoring their opponents 5-1. The visitors reached 13-12 but could not find the equaliser, with Balazs Nyiri producing an important late block to preserve the points. Lorinc Gabor led Kaposvar with four goals.

After two rounds, Ferencvaros, BVSC, OSC and Honved all sit on six points, while Vasas, Szolnok, Eger and Kaposvar have three.

Round 3 follows on Saturday, with Ferencvaros against Honved the standout fixture.
