Vouliagmeni celebrated a double triumph this weekend, with both the men’s and women’s teams claiming victory at the prestigious SEDY Water Polo Cup, an annual tournament in Greece.
The competition, organized each year by the Greek Water Polo Referees Association (SEDY), serves as a warm-up event ahead of the Greek League season. However, this year’s tournament saw a notable absence, as Olympiacos, Greece’s top water polo team, not participating in either the men’s (17th edition) or the women’s (9th edition) tournaments.
In the men’s division, Vouliagmeni topped Group A and advanced to the final, where they triumphed over Panionios 5-4 in a penalty shootout following a dramatic 11-11 tie in regulation time.
On the women’s side, six teams competed in a round-robin format. Vouliagmeni dominated, winning all five matches to claim the title with a perfect record.
While Olympiacos will represent Greece as the sole team in the 2023/24 Men’s Champions League, Vouliagmeni, Apollon Smyrnis, Panionios, Panathinaikos, and PAOK will compete in the Euro Cup qualification rounds.
Conversely, the Women’s Champions League will feature a strong Greek presence. Olympiacos has already qualified for the group stage, while Vouliagmeni, Glyfada, Ethnikos, and Panionios will aim to join them via the qualification rounds.
The domestic season in Greece begins on the 12th October.
